Monkton Nature Reserve

Monkton Nature Reserve is unique in East kent as the only privately owned nature reserve, held in trust for the local community.

Entrance to the Field Study Centre is free, where you will find archaeological and natural history exhibits and a large selection of secondhand books.

Modest entrance fees apply for access onto the reserve itself which features various habitats, such as chalk grassland, woodland and aquatic. Take a gentle walk around the reserve and discover lots of wildlife and wild flowers, such as birds of prey, migrating birds, newts and eight varieties of orchid, and much more.

Numerous benches around the reserve will allow you a moment to take in the lovely views. There are also various activities throughout the year for children including a brass rubbing trail, a dinosaur trail, pond dipping and an arts and crafts box in the main picnic area. More activities are planned.

We also have an active astronomy group with two on-site observatories. The group holds regular viewing evenings and events throughout the year.

Membership schemes are available. Free and disabled parking is available.

You can find us at the junction of the A253 Canterbury Road and A299 Thanet Way, CT12 4LH. The reserve can also be reached by bus on local bus routes 9 & 11.
