Powell-Cotton Museum,Quex House and Gardens
The Powell-Cotton Museum is arguably one of the most unique and fascinating private collections in the UK. The world class collection consists of 19th century natural history from Africa and Asia, presenting the diversity of the natural world through the finest taxidermy set in stunning scenes of African and Asian wildlife landscapes.
Our collection also includes oriental fine arts and porcelain, antique furniture, ceramics, weaponry and local archaeology. The primate material is world renowned and consists of almost 2,000 specimens. Visiting researchers, ranging from University professors to young students embarking on their first projects find a truly astounding collection available for study by appointment.
There has been a house at Quex since the early 1400s. It has been called 'Quex' since its ownership in the 1500s by the Quekes family who prospered in the extensive wool industry in Kent. After two hundred years, Quex House remains a family home. Its relaxed atmosphere and character are immediately appreciated when visitors step from the Museum galleries into the late-Victorian Oriental Drawing Room. Quex House proudly displays fascinating furniture, object's, art and a beautiful library.
No country house of merit would be complete without extensive gardens and Quex House is no exception. There are acres of beautiful, informal gardens available for visitors to explore, including lawns, herbaceous borders, exotic trees, ponds, listed statues, a woodland walk, monument, croquet lawn and a historic Victorian Walled Garden. We have recently embarked on a Garden Restoration Project which will bring our gardens and greenhouses back to their former glory over the next few years - please support us by visiting often.
Gallery 6 allows anyone visiting to 'be a researcher' and includes a handling collection of artefacts for anyone to inspect closely for study, creativity or play.
Our Gift Shop offers a fine array of stock ranging from books, memorabilia, jewellery, toys and Fair Trade items sourced directly from Africa
