Graham Ward: 'The Journey of the Magi'
12 Nov 2016 - 26 Nov 2016
Taking place in the Annex Gallery
The exhibition will comprise ten themed paintings based on the Journey of the Magi, the so-called 'Wise Men' who were sent to Bethlehem to search for the for the Christ-child. The painting-cycle is based on a number of influences from ancient as well as contemporary references from historical texts to twentieth-century poets such as Elliot and George Mackay Brown. Primary impetus for the subject-matter arises from the famous 12th-century carving 'The Dream of the Magi' by Giselbertus in Autun cathedral, as well as an astonnishing fragment from the Stone Choir in the crypt of the Cathedral at Santiago de Compostela. Steeped in ancient legend, the story of the Magi has continued throughout history, and remains of contemporary resonance for the 21st century.
