Todd - Magic Geezer

Friday 11th and Saturday 12th November at 7.30, Sunday, 13th November at 2.30pm.

Broadstairs Dickens Players are well known for their exciting and varied programme of productions and their latest is no exception.

Steve Todd (nom de plume Ace Books),  who writes and produces many of his own plays for his own group Hags Ahoy, has written a compelling, humorous and thought provoking play,  set in 1950’s South Africa.

It concerns a musician and journalist Todd Matschikiza who wrote and produced the first black jazz musical, in conjunction with a lyricist who was not only a woman, but was white.  Despite every hindrance and hardship, the musical, about a boxer known as ‘King Kong’, was a huge success both in South Africa, where Nelson Mandela attended the opening night, and when it transferred to London’s West End.

This play charts the musicals’ creation and stars many well known local actors such as Jon Carr, Katharine Elvin and Bill Harris.

As a play of this era cannot avoid the subject of apartheid, it is obviously confronted in this play.  But it is also a very upbeat, humorous play with a myriad of characters and includes some of the songs from the original musical. The Players members have thoroughly enjoyed working on such a diverse and original play, not least of all, getting to grips with the South African accent!

Tickets cost £9 in advance and to members of the Sarah Thorne Theatre Company and £11 on the doors and to non-members.
