Margate Rock & Blues 2017
13 May 2017
DR FEELGOOD | EDDIE & THE HOT RODS | JOHN OTWAY | THE MEMBERS + more!
There’s only one place for lovers of top-notch British Rhythm & Blues and Rock to be this May, and that’s Margate! The excitement switch will be turned up to eleven when four of the UK’s most iconic Rock and Blues acts come together for the third Margate Rock & Blues 2017 one-day festival on Saturday, May 13, 2017.
Co-headliners DR FEELGOOD are Britain’s most popular Rhythm & Blues band, with a long list of hits under their belt: ‘Roxette’, ‘Back in the Night’, ‘Milk and Alcohol’, ‘Down at the Doctors’, and ‘She Does it Right’ to name a few. The last album to feature founding vocalist Lee Brilleaux was recorded live on Canvey Island just two months before he died. Lee’s final wish was for the band to carry on. The current line-up is led by drummer Kevin Morris (since 1989), and features Steve Walwyn on lead guitar (since 1989), Phil Mitchell (since 1983) on bass, and charismatic vocalist, Robert Kane (since 1999).
Joining the Feelgoods are fellow Canvey Island Rock legends, Eddie & The Hot Rods, still led by original singer Barrie Masters, and cited by Mojo magazine as one of the 50 Most Influential Acts of all time. Expect a high-energy mix of classic and new Eddie & The Hot Rods songs including, ‘Teenage Depression’, ‘Quit This Town’, ‘Life On The Line’, ‘Gloria’, and the Number One UK Rock Anthem, ‘Do Anything You Wanna Do’.
Special guest John Otway first achieved notoriety with his eye-watering performance on Old Grey Whistle Test in 1977 and his subsequent hit single, 'Really Free’. He had to wait twenty-five years for his next hit, ‘Bunsen Burner’. To celebrate his 60th birthday, Otway produced a documentary film, Otway the Movie: The Story of Rock n Roll’s Greatest Failure. It was subsequently shown in cinemas nationwide and voted the second best film of 2012 by readers of The Guardian newspaper. Earlier this year, Otway announced he was planning to record a new album on the Caribbean island of Montserrat, making him the first international artist to record there since the Rolling Stones in 1989.
Closing Margate Rock & Blues 2017 show are The Members. Launching in 1976, their first single was ‘Solitary Confinement’, followed by ‘Sound of the Suburbs’, a song that would sell a million copies and define the musical stance of a generation. A great way to finish a wonderful show…
If that wasn’t enough, former recording star, Capital Rado DJ and presenter on Channel 4 TV’s The Tube, Wendy May, again returns to Margate with her highly acclaimed Locomotion DJ set, hosting on the main stage and playing top-notch Rhythm & Blues, Ska, Blues, and Punk discs between acts.
New for 2017: DeeJay Wheelie-Bag hosts in the Seaside Bar with his unique mix of music and cabaret, with quizzes and role-play games thrown in for good (or bad) measure. He invites audience participation and includes somewhat surreal games with even stranger prizes — all obtained at huge expense from the exclusive Dalston Pound Shop.
