‘Mixing Memory and Desire’: responses to the work of TS Eliot

Individual artists have engaged very differently with T.S Eliot work both in terms of media and orientation; the only common element being the generative possibilities of the line ‘mixing memory and desire’, a fragment from the opening of the poem.

Some artists have responded to the potency of Eliot’s imagery, others to the connection with Margate itself, yet others have worked at his troubling notion of tradition and his religious and political ties. Whatever the relationship with his work and the doubts he raises, the resultant ‘anxiety’ has proved the ‘handmaiden of creativity’.

The group of artists is drawn from local and London communities, in particular staff and alumni from the University of the Arts, London. The group includes: Julia Iwasz, Othman Abdullah, Jane Madsen, James Swinson, and Nicholas Addison.
