Mini route two

History, Art and Architecture Ride - 7km (4.5 miles)
There is a little bit of everything to enjoy on this Ramsgate-based adventure ride. The route is part coastal and also part rural. It takes in buildings and structures of historical or architectural interest, modern art and the breathtaking Royal Harbour, the only harbour in the country to hold the very rare ‘Royal’ status.
Viking Ship, Hugin Green, Pegwell Bay
Full-sized replica of a Viking ship, The ‘Hugin’, which was sailed from Denmark to Thanet in 1949.
Pegwell Village
Only a few old flint cottages remain of the original village, which attracted holidaymakers from Ramsgate.
Westcliff Terrace
Built around 1840 as an unsuccessful speculative venture, the houses in this huge terrace were converted into flats in the 1860s.
Westcliff Leisure Park, Royal Esplanade
This 1920s leisure complex has a boating pool, pavilions, a bowling green and crazy golf, plus an adventure playground and indoor amusement arcade.
St. Augustine’s Abbey Church, St. Augustine’s Road *
This splendid Victorian church was designed by the great Victorian architect Augustus Welby Pugin, who is buried there.
‘Hands and Molecules’ Sculpture, Royal Esplanade
Commissioned by Pfizer, and designed by local artist David Barnes, the bronze sculpture was unveiled in June 2000 to mark the opening of the National Cycle Network in Thanet.
Royal Harbour and Marina
Designed by Smeaton and Rennie, the two big names in Georgian marine engineering, the outline of the harbour remains essentially unchanged from that of 1793.
Madeira Walk
Built of pulomite, an artificial sandstone, in 1892 this walkway includes a cascade and a fountain.
Ramsgate Maritime Museum
The museum has a fascinating display of East Kent’s maritime heritage within four spacious galleries.
Italianate Greenhouse
Located within the George VI Memorial Park and built on land left after East Cliff Lodge was demolished, this ethereal-looking curved structure dates from the 1830s.
