AN EXHIBITION OF PAINTINGS AND DRAWINGS OF THE SEA FROM BOTH SIDES OF THE CHANNEL BY BRITISH ARTIST PIPPA DARBYSHIRE
Pippa Darbyshire is an artist and painter with an illustrious creative background which has also seen her open an art gallery and centre for cultural events in rural France. Since leaving Norwich Art school in 1990 she has been almost exclusively, painting, exhibiting and selling from her own gallery/open studio first in Suffolk and then in France and from the occasional art fair including ArtUp in Lille and Rouen, The Affordable Art fairs in Brussels and the Brighton Art Fair and Open Studio.
Even before art school she worked for years as a decorator specialising in marbling, wood graining and murals for London department stores Harrods and Selfridges. Pippa says, “That experience gave me my knowledge of paints and pigments and I often use the same tools and techniques in my artwork”. Pippa comments, “I make very minimal paintings of any view that attracts me but mainly of the sea from both sides of the channel. Hence the title of the exhibition; TRAVERSE. I paint mainly the sea in oil paints that I mix myself from pigments of ultra marine blue (sea) and raw umber (earth).
After many years of working en plein aire or from sketches and photos , I have recently started to paint from my imagination or is it memory? My work is figurative but it is the underlying geometric construction that interests me and I often leave the pencil workings exposed. I see my paintings gradually becoming even more simplified, monochromatic and abstract”
