An immersive installation at Projects Kavel Rafferty in Margate
Open 11am - 5pm
Private View / Event Night: Saturday 29th November 6pm - 9pm
Wax & Wish is a cinematic installation that transforms a gallery-type space into an immersive beauty salon-wellness hybrid.
At the core of the installation is a comedy short film screened within a curtained area of the reconstructed salon environment.
Visitors experience the work by engaging with interactive 'treatments' that correspond to themes explored in the film. These include a: manifestation audio recording station, a sound bath area, wax fortune-telling corner using hot wax divination, sculptural orchid displays, and a ‘digital selfie board’ connecting to the film’s dating app narrative.
The installation responds to Margate’s thriving beauty salon culture and the area’s growing wellness scene, from sound baths to therapeutic practices. It examines our contemporary relationship with self-care, beauty standards, and healing modalities in a way that is playful whilst initiating discussions about contemporary beauty standards.
Designed as an accessible entry point for those unfamiliar with beauty or wellness practices, the work creates space for reflection on self-worth, modern therapy culture, and the intersection of appearance and wellbeing. The salon setting provides familiar territory for examining how we construct and maintain our sense of self in an image-conscious age.
