Westgate Heritage Talks

1st Saturday of Month. Church open 10am-12pm with Talk at 10.30am

Dr Dawn Crouch and guest speakers will make a short talk at 10.30am on aspect of the history of Westgate and Westbrook

*7th December - 'Westgate’s Sea defences' Illustrated talk by Dave Morrish, who is a civil engineer. Westgate’s new stretch of sea wall and promenade 1957

*4th January - 'Westgate in the Second World War' part of a rolling programme “We Have a Story to Tell” based on the stories of local people to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the War. “The Phoney War - September 1939 - April 1940”. Script written by Dr Dawn Crouch and read by Heritage Centre members.

*1st February - “My experiences as a NHS doctor” by Dr Graham Field

*7th March - Annual General Meeting followed by a short talk by a member who was inspired to research a family following a chance encounter with a member of that family at the Heritage Centre in 2019

*4th April - Illustrated Talk prepared by Dr Dawn Crouch based on recent research. “The changing face of Westgate south of the A28 after the Second World War”

 

From May until the end of August the Heritage Centre is open every Saturday 10am to 12 noon and every Wednesday 11am to 1pm. Talks are given on the first Saturday of each month at 10.30am

 

*2nd May - Illustrated Talk by Sally Whitworth and Colin Osborne “Westgate summer sporting activities - the story of the Tennis and Cricket Clubs”

*6th June - “Westgate in the Second World War We Have a Story to Tell”. The 80th anniversary of June 1940 when the Thanet children were evacuated to Staffordshire after the Fall of Dunkirk, based on stories collected from evacuees. Script written by Dr Dawn Crouch and read by Heritage Centre members

*4th July - to be announced 

*1st August - to be announced

*5th September - “Westgate in the Second World War We Have a Story to Tell”. The 80th anniversary of the Battle of Britain based on stories collected from those who remained after the evacuation of much of the civilian population in July 1940. Script written by Dr Dawn Crouch and read by Heritage Centre members
