Just before the outbreak of the First World War, a Royal Naval Air Service Station used by seaplanes was opened at St Mildred’s Bay (formerly Marsh Bay). Seaplanes took off from the sea itself and two slipways constructed for the seaplanes were used to convey the seaplanes from the hangers to the sea, and back again. The returning planes were winched back onto the shore.

Take a wander through the town's shops, many under Victorian canopies, and browse for local craft makers' work, or that perfect souvenir. Watch a film at the heritage Edwardian Carlton Cinema, and try out local coffee shops and restaurants. Grab an ice cream, or some fish & chips and head for the Prom, enjoying the seafront views and lovely sunsets.

The town's two wide open bays at West Bay and St Mildred's are great places to unwind, relax, and explore the rockpools for sightings of our coastal wildlife. Why not hire a bike, try a dip in the sea, or take a longer walk along the Promenade to neighbouring Margate or Birchington, stopping off for refreshments at beachside cafes/restaurants along the way. Alternatively tee off at the clifftop golf course!
