Margate, broadstairs and ramsgate's family fun coast
The Isle of Thanet is England’s original seaside escape. For generations families have headed here to delight in building sandcastles surrounded by incoming tides before tucking into candyfloss, ice cream and fish n’ chips.
Our chalk reefs and rock pools team with creatures. So you can sneak in some learning by stealth – seaside safaris uncover colour-changing algae and edible seaweed; shore-side strolls reveal fossils and an 80 million year-old past, with the Thanet Coast Project
And around Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate, it’s not just a case of going to ‘the’ beach – there are 15 to choose from. So you could do your splashing, paddling and laughing at award-winning Minnis Bay, West Bay, St Mildred’s Bay, Westbrook Bay, Margate Main Sands, Walpole Bay, Joss Bay, Stone Bay, Viking Bay, Louisa Bay or Ramsgate Main Sands.
This string of sandy coves is linked by the stunning Viking Coastal Trail – arguably Kent’s most attractive seaside leisure cycle route. Nearly two-thirds is traffic free and nearby railway stations and bike hire points make it ideal for family rides.
Hop on a pleasure boat or RIB for up-close views of seals, birds and massive off shore wind farms. Or hang on tight and squeal with delight on countless beach-side rides, especially at Margate Main Sands, Joss Bay, Viking Bay and Ramsgate Main Sands. Plenty of mini and adventure golf courses keep family competitiveness cranked up high.
Quick transport links from London mean you won’t hear “are we there yet?” too often, while fun-filled family events tempt you this way. The Sandcastle Challenge comes to Margate in July; the Broadstairs Water Gala is an unmissable beach culture mash-up, with teddy bears’ picnics, tug-o-war contests and Punch n’ Judy or September sees Wheels and Fins at Joss Bay, Broadstairs
All that ensures Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate deliver modern-meets-classic family holidays. And some very happy days.
