No. 42 Margate has launched its autumn residency with Margate-based artist Mercedes Lucy.
Her new work, Mythical Sea Women, is now on display at the hotel made up of 15 panels painted in acrylic and ink on board. The series brings together stories from around the world, celebrating Margate and life at the water's edge and exploring the folklore surrounding these women, whether seductive or sinister, benevolent or dangerous. Each has her own story and deserves to be told.
Lucy is a permanent studio holder at Tracey Emin's TKE Studios in Margate and has exhibited at Kill Me Now Gallery, Saatchi Gallery, Matt's Gallery and Flowers Gallery. She creates hand-built sculptural vessels, often using casts of her own body and her children's, highlighting the invisible labour of domestic life and women's work. This interplay between the personal and the universal continues in her residency at No. 42, where she has developed a 15-panel artwork that tells stories of women by the sea. Exploring the female body, coastal landscapes, memory and lived experience, the panels create a space where personal and collective histories converge.
The residency is open to all, whether you're local or staying at the hotel, everyone is welcome to pop in for a coffee or a cocktail and head upstairs to appreciate the work. The 15 panels are for sale as a complete work from Frost Editions, along with a limited-edition print run of 10.
