Celebrate the rich history of Thanet and East Kent at this bumper event for Ramsgate and the Tunnels
10am - 4pm
The Ramsgate Tunnels are delighted to announce the return of their popular Local History Day. A free, one-day event featuring displays from local museums and heritage sites across Thanet and East Kent, celebrating the area’s rich history, from flying aces to historic holy sites.
A selection of Ramsgate Archive papers, chronicling the town’s history over the past hundred years, will be on display. The team of passionate and friendly volunteers will be on hand to offer expert advice and inspire visitors in their own historical investigations.
The Tunnels’ popular Deep Tunnel Shelter Tours will operate as normal, throughout the day (normal ticket prices apply; pre-booking advised).
Step back in time to the build-up and outbreak of the Second World War and hear the story of how the town’s visionary Mayor and Borough Surveyor oversaw the construction and use of the UK’s largest purpose-built civilian shelter. Hear the stories of those who ended up living within the old Victorian railway tunnel.
For those wishing to take a break, the Tunnels’ café will be open all day, offering a tempting selection of refreshments, light snacks, and cakes.
