A Mayday Rooms take-over of the Crab Museum for a dive into environmental activism and resistance in the 1990s...
11am - 5pm Friday, Saturday & Sunday (last admission 4.30pm)
The Crab Museum are very happy to announce that they’re relinquishing control over the Museum’s Claw Learning Studio to friends at the MayDay Rooms!
Come along to learn, and reminisce about, histories of tree-based resistance during the '90s.
The MayDay Rooms exist as a free archive, a community resource and safe haven for social movements, experimental, and marginal cultures and their histories.
If you wondered what happens to the protest posters and placards from the last 50+ years - this is where they went! With thousands of documents, pamphlets, zines, and countless hours of video footage, MayDay Rooms are the critical collection of protest movements from the UK and abroad.
Join MayDay Rooms at the Crab Museum for the opening of a collection of materials from their environmental direct action archives. Trees are Good frames tactics of tree-sitting within broader anti-extractivist and anti-capitalist struggles. Here in the UK, fights for urban space, squatting, rave and free-party culture entwined and collided with environmental struggles. The installation at the Crab Museum highlights some of the novel and creative approaches taken to prevent the destruction of trees, forests and woodlands, with a particular emphasis on materials from the '90s onwards....
With all that in mind, the Crab Museum are over the moon to be hosting them for this special pop-up exhibition. They have exerted no curatorial control over the content, so the words are all those of the MayDay Rooms, and the archive speaks for itself.
16th October: Free Exhibition Launch Event 6-8pm
