Photographer Arnold Borgerth’s 'The Image, The Other, and Images of The Other' asks what happens when that culture is replicated in the gallery space at The Margate School of Art.
10am–4pm
Acknowledging the fact that we live in a culture saturated with images (particularly images of people), Arnold Borgerth’s 'The Image, The Others, and Images of The Others' asks what happens when such culture is replicated in a gallery space.
Using the same apparently disconnected and casual approach in which we navigate our current visual culture, Arnold photographs people he knows, such as family and extended family members, as well as total strangers, some within a specific context, some at random places.
The question being asked is this: to what extent can we actually understand other human beings, based solely on the simplistic game of appearances fostered by the virtuality of social media and the use of photographic images as evidence?
Arnold Borgerth is a studio-holder at The Margate School of Art, and has exhibited widely across South America and the UK. Arnold is a Photography Lecturer at Goldsmiths, University of London and works as a freelance photographer for the arts and design sector. Originally from Brazil and currently based in Margate, Arnold has been a practicing photographer since 1980.
