Spencer Rowell presents The Athena 1980s Collection and other works at the old Nat West Bank building in Ramsgate
Open Wednesday to Sunday
Private View Thursday 21st May
On 26 May 1986, in Spencer Rowell’s London studio, a sepia-toned monochrome image was taken of a male model cradling a newborn baby. No one present could have known it would become the best-selling poster in British history, or that it would come to embody the arrival of a new cultural archetype – the sensitive, but sexy, 'New Man'. Forty years on, its power remains something of an enigma.
L’Enfant, often called ‘Man & Baby’, was Athena’s most reproduced image. It was one of many iconic and instantly recognisable photographs that emerged from the brilliant creative partnership of photographer Spencer Rowell and art director Paul Rodriguez.
To celebrate the 40th Anniversary of L’Enfant, AthenaArt has collaborated with Spencer Rowell to re-issue 25 classic posters from the original collection and, for the first time ever, 25 previously unpublished images from this period.
Free entry and a percentage of all gallery sales will be donated to Arts in Ramsgate
