Discussing Vaim by Jon Fosse at Fort Road Hotel Bar
6.30pm
A short, floaty fable of big and little boats, loneliness, love and death that pivots on one strong-willed woman and the two docile men of her life, Vaim is the latest novel from Nobel Prize winner Fosse and his go-to translator Damion Searls.
Weird and hypnotic in the telling, the story travels with small-town bachelor Jatgeir as he sails to the big city on his wooden boat, which is named Eline after his long-lost first love. That night while asleep on Eline (the boat), he's awoken by a familiar voice. It's Eline (the woman), who has packed her bags, left her husband Frank, and wants to come back to the town of Vaim with him. 'And all, of course, was strange… '.
