Elinor Cleghorn discusses her new book A Woman's Work at Fort Road Hotel Bar in Margate
7pm - 9pm
A radical and intersectional history of motherhood - from the ancient world to the ongoing fight for reproductive justice.
Mothers make history and create change. And yet, patriarchal narratives of the past often overlook the power inherent in the acts of growing, birthing and caring for children. In her latest book A Woman's Work, Elinor Cleghorn salutes the mothers, othermothers, midwives and activists who have fought and lobbied across centuries to take back control over the maternal body, from medieval nun Hildegard von Bingen to abolitionist Sojourner Truth. Alongside their stories, the book also details the ongoing contemporary fight for reproductive rights, which is far from over.
A writer and researcher with a background in feminist visual culture and history, Dr Elinor Cleghorn's non-fiction debut, Unwell Women, a timely exposé of the medical world and woman's place within it, was published in June 2021. She'll be discussing A Woman's Work in conversation with award-winning journalist, producer and presenter Iman Amrani.
