This exhibition brings together two painters whose work explores the emotional resonance of everyday spaces. Working from different starting points but with a shared sensitivity to the psychological charge of domestic environments, Niki Duffy and Polly Judge present paintings that invite moments of stillness and uncertainty.
Duffy’s paintings are rooted in careful observation but extend beyond the visible world. Working primarily in oil paint, he creates meditative studies that move between the world around him and inner landscapes shaped by dreams, memory and consciousness. Familiar scenes from his home, neighbourhood and daily life become quietly atmospheric, often liminal spaces, where luminous light, architecture and solitary figures suggest unresolved narratives.
Judge draws on family photographs, found imagery and memory to create intimate domestic interiors that hang between recollection and imagination. Her paintings explore the fragile relationship between memory, place and human presence, where domestic interiors become repositories for both personal and imagined histories. Figures emerge and recede amongst patterned surfaces and furniture, while layers of paint loosen the authority of the original image. Her paintings become places where memory is slowly reassembled.
Duffy and Judge are alumni of the inaugural Turps Margate Studio Programme (2025-6). Room Between Us marks the first exhibition to bring their work together, offering a conversation between two emerging painters whose distinct practices share an enduring fascination with the spaces we inhabit.
