Join Katerina Knight for a unique embroidery retreat working closely with nature at Kindred House in Margate
*The workshop runs from 11am-4pm on Saturday and Sunday and attendance on both days is required*
Over two days, Katerina will introduce participants to a series of traditional hand embroidery techniques incorporating dried plant materials as alternative textile embellishments. You will experiment stitching with materials such as lavender seeds, cornflowers, dahlia petals, rosemary, and more. Whether you are interested in textiles, gardening, meditation, or would just like to learn something new, this retreat promises to be soothing and sensorial.
A rich variety of plant materials will be provided by Katerina, homegrown or sustainably foraged from her local surroundings in the Malvern hills to begin working with. This will be supplemented with group foraging activities, finding inspiration from the local coastal plant life.
No previous embroidery experience is necessary, you are encouraged to take each stitch slowly and learn at a pace that is comfortable for you.
Through this retreat, Katerina hopes that participants will leave imbued and inspired to observe nature’s intricate details, be thankful for our Earth's magical materials, and experience the mindful benefits that invite a connection between slow craft and nature.
Day 1
Katerina will introduce the group to the art of embroidery using plant materials, beginning with a simple stitch exercise, getting to know these new alternative embellishments and the delicate hand that is required when working with them.
Katerina will then guide the class through a series of more advanced technical hand stitch techniques incorporating plant materials. Plant knowledge will also be interwoven throughout the session.
Day 2
Following the more technical teaching on day one, the focus on day two will be creative exploration. Katerina will begin by leading the group on a gentle foraging walk, exploring the local coastal surroundings to gather materials and new inspiration; returning to the studio there will be the opportunity to put the new technical skills developed in day one into practice.
Participants will then explore personal design ideas using these local foraged materials, and produce their own unique sampler, with the guidance and assistance of Katerina throughout.
Participants are welcome to begin day two by joining Katerina for an optional meditation.
