About the single:
'Wash Over Me' is an original composition by Hughie Gavin, founder and director of the Social Singing Choir. The lyrics are drawn entirely from words submitted by the choir's 140 members. Hughie invited singers to share what the ocean evokes for them, then wove their submissions into a single unified lyric. The piece also features the whale song recorded by the Whale Wise team in a remote fjord in Iceland this year. The result is a truly collective composition, shaped by the community that performs it and by the animals and habitat they advocate for. The choir rehearses in an old bandstand overlooking Walpole Bay, and post-rehearsal swims in the tidal pool are a regular occurrence. 'Wash Over Me' is a love letter from a coastal community to the water that shapes their lives.
All proceeds from the single go directly to Whale Wise, supporting research and advocacy for whale habitats across the North East Atlantic. The single features a humpback whale song recorded in Finnafjörður, Northeast Iceland, a near-pristine fjord and potentially crucial seasonal habitat for migratory whales.
Award-winning wildlife photographer and filmmaker Rebecca Douglas and President of the Board of Trustees for Whale Wise, has created a short film to accompany the release. May 22nd is the first chance to see it on the big screen.
8th June - 'Wash Over Me' releases worldwide on World Ocean Day.
