The Palace Cinema
The Palace is a cosy independent cinema in a lovely listed building, showing the very latest independent releases from around the world, many not to be found anywhere else in Thanet. This vibrant little cinema is very much at the heart of Broadstairs' community life showing family films during school holidays, silent films accompanied with live music, a regular peppering of big screen classics and is even available to hire for your very own special private screening.
The Palace may look tiny from the outside, but step into the foyer to find fresh coffee, popcorn, sweets and our small licensed bar before taking your seat in the lovely auditorium; we have 111 seats in all, spread between a magical balcony and the gorgeous stalls below. The auditorium's large screen stretches almost the width of the building, with perfect views from any seat. The building may be well over a hundred years old but the films are shown using the very latest digital projection and fantastic surround sound.
The cinema is Grade II listed: it was converted in 1911 from a 3-storey commercial building into 'York Gate Hall' and briefly held a collection of armour. In 1965, after years used for storage and even puppet shows for holidaymakers, it was converted again to become a full-time cinema, 'The Windsor', re-named 'The Palace' in 2006. The current owners, since 2016, are lovingly restoring the building to its former splendour.
