A special Jamaican Independence Day screening of the 1978 cult classic reggae film at Hoffs in Margate

7pm - 10pm (Introduction at 7.30pm, film at 8pm)

The event features an introduction by Rudi Minto de Wijs and collaborates with the People Dem Collective.

Rockers (1978) is more than a cult classic. It's a living document of Kingston at the height of the roots reggae era, capturing a world where music, community, spirituality and resistance were inseparable. Originally conceived as a documentary before evolving into a feature film, it blurs the line between fiction and reality with an extraordinary cast of reggae legends including Leroy 'Horsemouth' Wallace, Gregory Isaacs, Jacob Miller, Burning Spear and Big Youth.

For many people outside Jamaica, Rockers became one of the defining visual introductions to Rastafari culture, sound systems and the everyday lives of the musicians who shaped reggae history. Its influence can still be seen across film, fashion, photography and music nearly fifty years later.

Beyond its cultural importance, Rockers is simply a brilliant film. Funny, warm, rebellious and full of unforgettable performances, all carried by one of the greatest soundtracks ever put to screen.
