This session will give you the skills and techniques to make a start on your creative journey at Margate's Clayspace

10am - 12.30pm

This session is ideal if you’ve had the ideas, but not the confidence to make sculptural forms.

The tutors will encourage you to explore sculptural form using handbuilding techniques such as coiling, slabbing, pinching and extruding while experimenting with different textural effects.

There will be an emphasis on working with the clay with an open mind and an experimental approach, responding to the clay’s inherent tendencies and expressiveness, letting the clay guide you as well as you guiding it.

The session will be relaxed and informative. The tutor’s aim is for everyone to explore the limits of the material so that they have a better understanding of what can be achieved.

The aim is not necessarily to walk away with a finished piece, but rather to learn and enjoy the process.

You will biscuit fire up to two medium sized sculptures, which can be collected to be decorated at your leisure.

At the end of the course, you will have the confidence to make similar forms and with the energy to question and explore all of your skills learnt to date. As no two makers will work in the same way, it is important that you explore and show off your own strengths rather than working towards those of others.
